Going Solo

It happens in most bands.  A musician has material that doesn’t fit the band they’re in, or just wants to do something a little different, and they drop a solo album.  Some are huge failures (like when the members of KISS released their solo albums simultaneously) and some are gems.  Dan Auerbach’s (singer/guitarist for The Black Keys) “Keep It Hid” falls into the latter category.

In no particular order, here are some of my favorite solo albums:

Bob Schneider – “Lonelyland”

Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) – “Killers And Stars”

Gas Giants (Robin Wilson of the Gin Blossoms) – “From Beyond The Back Burner”

Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt) – “Stone, Steel, and Bright Lights” (live)

Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers) – “Knockdown South”

John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival) – “Blue Moon Swamp”

Paul Westerberg (The Replacements) – “Come Feel Me Tremble”

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) – “About Face”

Keith Richards (Rolling Stones) – “Talk Is Cheap”

Ryan Adams (Whiskeytown) – “Heartbreaker”

Jojo Hermann (Widespread Panic) – “Smiling Assassin”

What are some of your favorites from artists who splintered off from their band?
