Legendary Guitars

Saw this article today:

Ask Men’s Top Ten Legendary Guitars

For those of you who are too lazy to click on the link, here’s the list –

10.  Lucille – B.B. King’s modified Gison ES-335

9.  Micawber – Keith Richard’s ’52 Tele, kept in open-G tuning

8.  Lucy – George Harrison’s 1957 Les Paul Standard (the article picture shows him holding an ES-335, so ignore that)

7.  Lenny – Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 1965 Strat, a gift from his wife Lenore

6.  Trigger – Willie Nelson’s battered Martin N-20 (N is for nylon stringed)

5.  Old Black – Neil Young’s 1953 Les Paul, a Goldtop painted black and with a Bigsby tremelo

4.  Miss Pearly Gates – Billy Gibbons’ 1959 Les Paul in sunburst (the pickups have been replicated by Seymour Duncan)

3.  Frankenstrat – Eddie Van Halen’s slapped together Strat copy with Floyd Rose tremelo

2.  Woodstock – Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 Strat, a righty turned upside down and restrung for the Southpaw

1.  Blackie – Eric Clapton’s cobbled together “super Strat” made from 3 seperate Strats he had purchased

It’s a good list.  A few I would add:

Stevie Ray’s #1, the beat up ’59 Strat that produced his signature sound

Rory Gallagher’s “no-finish” Strat (most of the paint had worn off)

Jerry Garcia’s Doug Irwin guitar:

Ted Nugent’s Gibson Byrdland

Bo Diddley’s rectangular Gretsch (based on cigar box guitars)

Joe Satriani’s Chrome Boy Ibanez

Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang

Joe Strummer’s Tele

Bruce Springsteen’s ’52 Tele

Bob Marley’s Les Paul Studio

Angus Young’s Gibson SG with Maestro tremelo

Tony Iommi’s Gibson SG

Albert King’s Gibson Flying V (flipped for a Southpaw, but not restrung – he played upside down)

Muddy Waters’ modified Fender Tele

Roger McGuinn’s Rickenbacker 360/12

  1. Great list and a kicking site.Looking to buy the Jerry Garcia with Irwin image? The best shot of Jerry I’ve seen.
