Rollerskate Skinny

The secretaries I worked with at college would play the Old 97’s song “Question” over and over, and I hated it.  Not a great introduction to the band.  It wasn’t until I happened to catch them on some TV show playing this song that I really got hooked in:

The song has a few interesting references.  The title comes from a line in “Catcher In The Rye”, J.D. Salinger’s famous novel.  The line “wouldn’t be here if the Athenia hadn’t sunk” references a passenger ship that was torpedoed by a German U-Boat.  Rhett Miller’s grandmother was one of the survivors, and (as any student of chaos theory knows) that event set her on the path that led to her meeting the grandfather (Giles Miller).  Who knows what would have happened if it had been an uneventful trip?

Maybe we wouldn’t have such an awesome band to listen to.
